The axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) is a species of amphibian that is native to Mexico. It is also known as the Mexican walking fish, although it is not a fish, but rather a type of salamander. Axolotls are unique in that they retain their larval form throughout their entire lives, and never undergo metamorphosis to become adult land-dwelling salamanders. Axolotls have several unique characteristics that set them apart from other amphibians. They have gills that are visible on the sides of their heads, and they are able to regenerate lost body parts, such as limbs, spinal cord, heart, and even parts of the brain. This ability to regenerate lost body parts has made axolotls popular among scientists studying the mechanisms of regeneration. Axolotls are also popular as pets, and can be found in pet stores or online. They are typically kept in aquariums with a substrate of gravel or sand and a source of filtered water. They are carnivores, and their diet typically consists of earthworms, brine shrimp, and other small aquatic animals. Due to habitat destruction, pollution, and introduction of non-native fish that prey on axolotl, wild populations have seen a significant decline, and they are considered critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
